Intelligent Design
The movement's history, its central arguments, and the Kitzmiller v. Dover ruling on whether it is science.

Intelligent design holds that certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause rather than an undirected process. Its proponents present it as a scientific research programme distinct from creationism.
Its institutional home is the Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture, founded in 1996 in Seattle. Its principal figures are Michael Behe, William Dembski, Stephen Meyer, and Jonathan Wells.

The documentary history
The movement's origin is unusually well documented, because it became evidence in a trial.

The textbook drafts were subpoenaed in Kitzmiller. One transitional draft contains the word "cdesign proponentsists" — the result of replacing "creation" with "design proponent" in "creationists" and leaving the surrounding letters. The definition of intelligent design in the published book is otherwise word-for-word the definition of creation in the earlier drafts.
The Wedge Document states the programme's governing goals as "to defeat scientific materialism and its destructive moral, cultural and political legacies" and "to replace materialistic explanations with the theistic understanding that nature and human beings are created by God." The Discovery Institute confirmed the document's authenticity and described it as a fundraising memo.
Kitzmiller v. Dover
The Dover Area School District required a statement to be read in biology classes presenting intelligent design as an alternative to evolution. Eleven parents sued.
Judge John E. Jones III — appointed by George W. Bush, recommended by Rick Santorum, and a churchgoing Republican — ruled against the district in December 2005 after a six-week trial. The ruling found:
- Intelligent design is not science. It invokes supernatural causation, relies on the false dichotomy that evidence against evolution is evidence for design, and its negative arguments have been refuted in peer-reviewed literature.
- It is a religious argument, established by the textbook's drafting history and the movement's own stated goals.
- The Dover board's claimed secular purpose was, in the ruling's words, a sham.
The district was ordered to pay approximately $1 million in legal costs. All eight board members who supported the policy were voted out before the ruling issued.
The publication record
Intelligent design has produced very little peer-reviewed primary research. The most cited case is Stephen Meyer's 2004 paper in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington, which the journal's governing council subsequently repudiated, stating that it had not been through the society's normal review process and that it did not meet the journal's scope.
The Discovery Institute maintains a bibliography of supportive publications, which consists largely of philosophy papers, conference proceedings, and articles in journals it established. Behe acknowledged under oath that no peer-reviewed article supports the design inference for the systems he cites.
Common objections
"Intelligent design is not creationism — it makes no claim about who the designer is"
The formal claim is accurate. The published arguments do not name the designer, and Behe has said the designer could in principle be an alien.
The drafting history of Of Pandas and People is the difficulty. The definition of intelligent design in the published edition is the definition of creation in the pre-Edwards drafts with the terms substituted, and the substitution occurred in the months following the Supreme Court's ruling against creation science.
The movement's own stated aim, in the Wedge Document, is to replace materialistic explanations "with the theistic understanding that nature and human beings are created by God."
Phillip Johnson, generally regarded as the movement's founder, described the strategy as making the issue "the existence of God" once the ground had been prepared.
"Design detection is a legitimate scientific inference — archaeology and forensics use it"
The strongest argument the movement makes, and the comparison is fair as far as it goes. Archaeologists distinguish tools from stones, and forensic scientists distinguish homicide from natural death.
Those inferences rest on knowledge the biological version lacks. An archaeologist knows what human toolmakers are capable of, what materials they used, and what unworked stone looks like in the same deposit, because humans are independently known to exist and their products are independently characterised.
The design inference in biology has no independently known designer, no known capabilities or constraints, and no specimen of undesigned life for comparison. Without those, "this could not have arisen naturally" carries the whole argument, which returns it to a negative form.
"Specified complexity is a rigorous mathematical criterion"
Dembski's formulation is genuinely technical and was published by Cambridge University Press.
The main criticisms are specific rather than dismissive. Calculating the probability of a biological structure requires knowing the space of possible alternatives and the process that produced it, and Dembski's calculations generally assume the structure assembled at random in one step — which is not what evolution proposes.
His appeal to the "No Free Lunch" theorems has been contested by their author, David Wolpert, who wrote that Dembski's use of them was "written in jello" and that the theorems do not apply to co-evolutionary processes of the kind at issue.
The criterion has not been applied to produce a published result identifying design in a biological system in a way other researchers could replicate.
"Scientists reject it because of materialist bias, not evidence"
Institutional resistance to unorthodox ideas is real, and continental drift is the standard example of a correct idea dismissed for decades.
Drift was accepted once seafloor spreading and magnetic striping supplied evidence, over roughly a decade, against equally entrenched opposition. The route existed and was taken.
Intelligent design has been publicly argued since the late 1980s and has produced essentially no primary research. The path is available: identify a system, show the design inference makes a prediction ordinary biology does not, and test it.
The Discovery Institute's own strategy document also frames the goal in cultural and religious rather than research terms, which weighs against the bias explanation.
"Teach the controversy — students should hear both sides"
The framing is appealing, and disagreement is a normal part of science that students benefit from seeing.
There is no controversy of the kind the phrase implies. The disagreements within evolutionary biology are about mechanism and rate — the relative weight of drift and selection, the tempo of speciation — not about common descent.
The Kitzmiller ruling addressed this directly, finding the "teach the controversy" framing to be a strategy for introducing a religious argument rather than a description of the state of the field.
What the evidence shows
Intelligent design proposes that some biological features require an intelligent cause. Its central arguments — irreducible complexity and specified complexity — have been answered in the scientific literature, and the specific biological examples have been shown to have functional intermediates or identifiable ancestry.
The movement has produced very little primary research in nearly four decades, and its one prominent peer-reviewed paper was repudiated by the journal that published it.
The documentary record establishes its origin as a relabelling of creation science following a Supreme Court ruling, and its own founding strategy document describes its aim in religious terms.
This does not establish that the universe is undesigned, which is a philosophical question addressed under Cosmic Fine-Tuning and in the arguments for God. It establishes that the specific scientific claims made by this movement have not held up.
