Catastrophe and Gradualism
Geology has accepted catastrophic events for decades, and uniformitarianism was never the claim that nothing sudden happens.

Uniformitarianism is often described as the claim that geological change is always slow and gradual, and that geologists refuse to accept catastrophes. This is a caricature of the current position, though it has some historical basis.
Modern geology accepts catastrophic events routinely. The disagreement with flood geology is not about whether catastrophes occur but about which ones the evidence supports.
What uniformitarianism means
The principle has two distinct senses, regularly conflated.

Stephen Jay Gould set this distinction out in a 1965 paper. The first two are what the principle asserts today: that the same physics applies, so a ripple mark in ancient rock formed the way ripple marks form now.
The last two are what Charles Lyell argued in the 1830s and what modern geology does not hold. Lyell's insistence on steady rates was an overcorrection against the catastrophism of his predecessors, and it delayed acceptance of several correct catastrophic explanations.

The Missoula floods
The most instructive case, because it is the example most often cited against geology and it resolved in favour of the catastrophist.
J Harlen Bretz proposed in the 1920s that the Channeled Scablands of eastern Washington — a landscape of enormous dry channels, giant ripple marks, and huge erratic boulders — were carved by catastrophic flooding in days rather than by slow erosion.
The geological establishment rejected it, and the rejection was explicitly ideological: catastrophic explanations were regarded as unscientific after the excesses of earlier flood geology, and Bretz was accused of reviving them.
The evidence accumulated over decades. Joseph Pardee identified Glacial Lake Missoula as the water source, giant current ripples up to 15 metres high were mapped, and the sequence of repeated outbursts was worked out. Bretz was awarded the Penrose Medal, geology's highest honour, in 1979 at the age of 96.
The episode shows that geology's resistance to catastrophism was real, that it was overcome by evidence, and that the discipline honoured the person who overturned it.
Why flood geology is nevertheless rejected
The objection to a global flood is not that it is catastrophic. It is specific to what the model requires.
- Interruptions. The record contains buried soils, desiccation cracks, coral reefs in growth position, dinosaur nesting horizons, and desert dune fields with animal tracks. These require deposition to have stopped. See Flood Geology.
- Rate-limited deposits. Evaporites, chalk, and reef limestone are limited by evaporation, plankton reproduction, and coral metabolism rather than by sediment supply. See Time in Sedimentary Rock.
- The fossil order. Hydrodynamic sorting, ecological zonation, and differential escape make incompatible predictions, and none matches the observed order. See The Geologic Column.
- Energy. Compressing plate motion and radioactive decay into a year releases heat that young-earth technical literature acknowledges as unresolved.
The Missoula floods left a diagnostic signature: giant ripples, scoured channels, erratics, and a single depositional event with no soils inside it. That is what a real catastrophic flood deposit looks like, and geologists identified it as such once the evidence was assembled.
Common objections
"Geologists reject catastrophes on principle"
Historically true to a degree. Lyell's uniformitarianism was doctrinaire about rates, and the Bretz episode shows the cost.
It has not been true for decades. The Chicxulub impact hypothesis, proposed in 1980, was accepted within about a decade once the iridium layer, shocked quartz, and finally the crater were identified — an explicitly catastrophic explanation for the largest extinction event most people know of.
The current textbook position is that geology proceeds by a mixture of gradual processes and rare high-energy events, and the term "actualism" is often used in place of uniformitarianism to avoid the rate implication.
"Bretz was vindicated, so flood geology will be too"
The parallel is drawn frequently and the first half is accurate.
The difference is in what changed the outcome. Bretz's position won because specific evidence accumulated: the source lake was identified, giant current ripples were mapped, and the flood pathways were traced. He made predictions about what should be found, and it was found.
Flood geology has been argued in its modern form since 1961 and has not produced a comparable body of confirming evidence. The specific claims examined across this section — polystrate fossils, Mount St. Helens, hydrodynamic sorting — are arguments that particular observations are compatible with a flood, not predictions of things subsequently discovered.
Bretz also proposed a regional flood, from an identified source, leaving a distinctive signature that is present. A global flood would leave a signature too, and the features listed above are the reasons it is judged absent.
"Present rates can't be extrapolated into the past"
Correct, and geology does not assume they can. Rates have demonstrably varied — spreading rates, sedimentation rates, and extinction rates all change through the record, and the variation is measured rather than assumed.
The principle actually used is that the same processes operated, so a feature is interpreted by reference to how such features form now.
Independent cross-checks constrain rates where it matters. Tidal rhythmites record the length of the day in the past and match the rate of tidal slowing calculated from celestial mechanics, which is a rate measurement from outside geology entirely.
What the evidence shows
Uniformitarianism as practised means that the same physical laws and processes applied in the past. It does not mean that rates were constant, and geology has rejected that version since at least the 1960s.
Catastrophic events are standard explanations across the discipline, including an asteroid impact, supervolcanic eruptions, continental-scale floods, and the desiccation of an entire sea.
The Missoula floods case shows that the discipline's earlier resistance to catastrophism was genuine, and that it was overcome by evidence within the lifetime of the person who proposed it.
Flood geology is rejected on the specific grounds set out in the linked articles, not because it proposes a catastrophe.
